SSJ Team Genesis, the Cathedral school of the Diocese of Phoenix, won the Honeywell Fiesta Bowl Aerospace Challenge, presented by American Airlines on Saturday, February 27th.
The annual competition challenges 5th through 8th grade students to enhance their knowledge of space technology through the development of an international lunar base. Teams were tasked with building a physical scale model and presenting sustainability plans for a crew of 50 people for more than two years.
The Aerospace Challenge winning team, SSJ Team Genesis, won an all expense paid VIP trip of a lifetime to Space Camp in Huntsville, Alabama, and a special on-field appearance at the upcoming FIesta Bowl game on 12/31/16.
More than 1,000 students participated in the preliminary competition earlier this month, and the following six teams were selected as finalists:
Genesis – SS. Simon and Jude Cathedral School
L.H.M.C. – Kyrene Centennial Middle School
Nerds from Neptune – Kyrene Middle School
R.E.A.D. – no school affiliation
Galactic Warriors – Tri-City Christian Academy
Lunar Extravaganza – Copper Basin K-8
