Local Valley High School Robotics Team Qualifies for World Championship

The (Glendale) Cactus High School robotics team spent six weeks designing, building and programming their robot, Lil Shredder, with the guidance of their mentors in preparation for the regional competition sponsored by FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology).

The 498 Cobra Commanders Robotics Team won the regional contest, competing against 55 other teams in the Skydome at Northern Arizona University.  The team now has an opportunity to move on to St. Louis next month to compete with more than 800 of the best robotics teams from around the world. It is estimated that between 8,000 and 10,000 people will attend the April 27th-30th event.

The robot is designed to shoot a ball, similar to an eight-inch dodge ball, into a seven-foot-high goal.

Qualifying for international competition comes at a steep price. The cost for the 18 person travelling crew, is $12,000, which would account for for all program fees, travel, lodging and transportation. The money needs to be raised by April 15th.
