Sister Mary Joan Fitzgerald's
voice was strong, commanding, even though she had already read most of the 200
names Saturday morning at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. She was calling the graduating class of 2012
individually to the altar to officially receive the document, the diploma that
says to some it's over and to each - now it begins. In spite of the beauty of the surroundings
and the solemnity of the event, tension was building with the family that
invited us. The Xavier principal was already
starting the names that begin with "P" and within seconds she boomed out the
name Shannon Caitlin Kelahan-Pierson!
Well, she didn't really say it any different than all the other 309
graduates but it hit us with a boom - certainly her mom and dad and
sister. But Duffy and me too. Her extended family - dating back to a moment
in time 18 years ago in another Catholic church, this one in Tempe at Ladmo's
funeral when Wallace had me give away the last Ladmo bag. 7th row – 3rd seat in. We didn't know the couple sitting in the
lucky seat but the woman was pregnant – very pregnant with Shannon Caitlin Kelahan-Pierson. Congratulations Shannon. Have a good life.
I'm Pat McMahon.
