The Congressman will serve as commencement speaker at the Science Leadership Academy's graduation Monday and the George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science on Tuesday

WASHINGTON, June 13, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Next week in Philadelphia, Congressman Chaka Fattah (D-PA) will address two high school graduating classes, both filled with America's future scientists, technologists, engineers, and mathematicians. Fattah will deliver remarks at the Science Leadership Academy's (SLA) graduation ceremony on Monday evening, June 16 and the George Washington Carver High School of Engineering and Science (HSES) graduation on Tuesday, June 17; both schools have a specific focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.

As Ranking Member on the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, and Science (CJS), Fattah is focused on working with today's scientists, while inspiring a future generation of American scientists, astronauts, and engineers.  As part of these efforts, he has been one of the country's major proponents for increasing funding for basic scientific research, space exploration, and STEM education initiatives.

Both Philadelphia high schools have been recognized for their innovative curriculum and student success rates; at SLA, 119 students will graduate during Monday's ceremony, representing every zip code in the city. Of the graduating seniors, 98% have been accepted to a college. Carver HSES boasts a 100% college acceptance rate. Earlier this year, Fattah gave welcoming remarks at the ribbon cutting to launch the Dell Center of Excellence at SLA. He also introduced a major piece of legislation, America's FOCUS Act, at SLA last fall that would significantly increase funding to STEM education programs nationwide.

Continuing his focus on science and STEM, Fattah will also speak to the 3rd Annual International Space Station (ISS) Research and Development Conference in Chicago next week. Fattah's address will highlight the value of ISS as a National Laboratory and the impact of the research and technology conducted at the space station.
