25th Anniversary Edition Spotlights Historical Milestones
COLUMBIA, S.C., Oct. 29, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- AT&T* will unveil its 2014 South Carolina African-American History Calendar in a celebration on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at the Kroger Center for Arts in Columbia at 7:00 pm.
Originally developed as a resource for teachers to use in integrating African American history in their classroom curriculum, the Calendar has grown to be recognized as an online Hall of Fame, commemorating the lives, leadership and accomplishments of extraordinary South Carolinians. The 2014 edition takes a slightly different path in exploring the state's African American history, featuring 12 significant events rather than individuals.
"While history is made and shaped by people, it is marked by milestones," said Pamela Lackey, President of AT&T South Carolina. "Driven by men and women of courage and conviction, the events highlighted in the Anniversary Edition have helped to lay the foundation for our state today and to challenge us for the future. At AT&T, we are excited to be highlighting these stories from South Carolina's heritage, while also honoring the men and women of courage and conviction who embraced opportunities to create a better, brighter, more successful future."
Selected by the faculty of the School for African American Studies at the University of South Carolina, the events featured in the 2014 calendar span more than 150 years. They run the gamut from civil rights marches to landmark court cases, and acts of incredible individual courage. Highlighted in the 2014 Calendar will be:
The previous 24 editions of the Calendar have honored 297 African Americans with South Carolina roots. They represent a wide array of endeavors, including government and military service, education, performing and fine arts, business, community activism and athletics. They hail from every corner of the state, from rural communities to our largest cities. The stories of how each made a difference for people and for their communities can be found at www.scafricanamericanhistory.com.
